Robert Bloom, the Public Safety Systems Administrator in the Department of Emergency and Customer Communications (DECC) for the City of Alexandria, died July 20 after his SUV struck a traffic pole at the intersection of North Kings Highway and Telegraph Road in the Huntington section of Fairfax County.

Rappellers raise $60,000 for Special Olympics.
Rose Pleskow is not one to shy away from a challenge. The 23-year-old Reston resident competed in the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece, last summer, earned multiple medals in the 2012 Virginia Special Olympic Summer Games and recently competed in an 800-meter race in the waters around the Cayman Islands.

Longtime Campagna Center volunteer Bridget Weaver was honored Oct. 4 with the Elizabeth Anne Campagna Award at a Circle of 1000 reception at the home of Douglas and Grace Marie Turner. “I am completely overwhelmed,” said Weaver, who began her service to the Campagna Center 20 years ago as a member of the Junior Friends. “I am very humbled to receive this award and especially honored that it is named for a woman who continues to be a beacon to all of us.”

The name Humbert R. Versace is inscribed on Panel 01E, Row 033 of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. But in his hometown, “Rocky” Versace’s sacrifice and that of 66 other Alexandrians is memorialized in a statue on Commonwealth Avenue in Del Ray.
